The court buzzed with anticipation as MJ Tolentino player of Caduang Tete National High School win against Mark Sheandrei Tivoli of San Vicente San Francisco in the Grade 9 boys’ singles elimination round. Every eye followed the shuttle as it flew across the court, a symbol of hours of training, sweat, and dreams.
First Set: Tivoli came out with confidence, opening with a powerful smash that barely cleared the net. Tolentino returned it calmly, setting the tone for a tense back-and-forth. Each point felt like a small battle—Tivoli lunging, Tolentino stretching, both standing firm.

At 10–8, Tolentino began to take control. His strategy was simple but smart: keep the shuttle moving, make Tivoli run, and wait for mistakes. And it worked. Long rallies stretched both players to their limits. The crowd leaned forward as Tolentino executed a perfect drop shot at 20–18, leaving Tivoli just out of reach. First set to Tolentino, 21–18.
Second Set:
Tivoli, undeterred, attacked with relentless smashes, showing why he’s a formidable player despite being younger and less experienced in official tournaments. Tolentino’s eyes stayed sharp; he moved with patience, returning every shot with precise placement.
The set became a intense. Every rally was a test of stamina and endurance. At 18–18, the tension was intense, players breathing heavily, spectators holding their breath. Tolentino forced Tivoli into one last net error, then sealed the match with a confident cross-court smash. 21–19, and the victory was his.
After the match, Tolentino humbly acknowledged his opponent. “Tivoli’s attacks were strong, and he kept me on my toes. I just tried to stay patient and make smart plays,” he admitted.
Tivoli, though disappointed, showed grace. “Salamat sa supporters ko. Sila ang nagbibigay lakas sa akin,” he said, thanking those who encouraged him. His dreams of reaching the Palarong Pambansa, inspired by his grandmother and girlfriend, were still very much alive.
In the end, the match wasn’t just about winning. It was about heart, growth, and sportsmanship. Two young athletes gave everything on the court—one advancing to the finals, the other gaining lessons that would fuel future victories.
