The court fell silent as the shuttle dropped for the final point. In a match that tested patience, stamina, and heart, MJ Tolentino player of Caduang Tete National High School (CTNHS)secured his place in the finals after defeating Mark Sheandrei Tivoli player of San Vicente San Francisco (SVSF) in the elimination round of the 3rd Annual Cluster 7 Boys Badminton Chairman’s Cup.
Officiated by Ma’am Alma of Macabebe NHS, the Grade 9 boys singles match was a battle from start to finish. Tivoli came in strong, using blashing smashes and fast attacks to pressure his opponent early. A right-handed attacker coached by Sir Jerome, Tivoli has been playing badminton for four years, training three days before the Semi-Final with leg workouts and morning jogs to build strength.

But Tolentino remained composed.
Instead of matching power with power, MJ relied on smart placement and stamina. He drew Tivoli into long rallies, forcing mistakes and wearing him down. That strategy paid off as Tolentino took the first set, 21–18.
The second set was even closer. Tivoli fought fiercely, refusing to give up, but Tolentino’s steady play again made the difference. With steady movement and precisely strikes, MJ end the match at 21–19, earning the win and a spot in the finals.
For Tolentino, the victory was a proof of his hardwork . He shared that his focus on stamina and safe play helped him win, noting that tiring his opponent was key. Inspired by his older brother, a former SVSF player, MJ continues to push himself to improve his jump smashes and endurance.
Despite the loss, Tivoli remained gracious. “Salamat sa supporter ko, sila ang nagbibigay ng lakas ko,” he said after the match. Driven by his dream of reaching the Palarong Pambansa, and inspired by his girlfriend and grandma. Tivoli proved he has both talent and heart.
Tolentino acknowledged his opponent’s strength, noting that Tivoli’s powerful attacks were impressive, but occasional shuttle control mistake made the difference in such a tight match.
In the end, the elimination round wasn’t just about who came out on top. It was about effort, growth, compasion . And sportmanship two young athletes giving everything on the court—one advancing to the finals, the other gaining valuable experience and lesson for future battles.
